Fire Doors - 76% Not Suitable for Purpose - FDIS Survey

Its worrying news that the recent 2019 Fire Door Inspection Scheme survey that included 2700 buildings has found that over three quarters of fire door installations are not fit for purpose. They conclude that 30% were condemned due to poor installation issues including excessive gaps around the door and use of incompatible foam.

Over 57% required small scale maintenance -

The top three reasons for non compliance were -

1/ Excessive gaps
2/ Poor smoke seals
3/ Poorly adjusted door closers.
4/ 16% were not fire doors at all!

All the above issues would prevent the fire door providing the protection for which they are designed which is to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.

The buildings that the survey included were included sleeping accommodation, care homes, and properties that house people with mobility and cognitive needs.

The importance of fully functional, correctly installed fire doors really can mean the difference between life or death... they are crucial to ensure fire safety.
